In 1998, IEMA was formed by the merging of three organisations – the Institute of Environmental Assessment (formed mainly of corporate members), the Environmental Auditors Registration Association (EARA, formed of individual professionals working in Environmental Assessment), and the Institute of Environmental Management.
In 2014, IEMA merged with the Global Association of Corporate Sustainability Officers, incorporating corporate sustainability into the environmental agenda, thus expanding its work to encompass everything in both environmental management and sustainability.
In 2017, Thaipat Institute became an corporate partner of IEMA to harness the collective expertise and experience of over 20,000 sustainability and environmental professionals globally to provide the evidence, insights, and innovative solutions that businesses need to deliver sustainability and growth.
In 2025, IEMA changed its name and brand from The Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) to the Institute of Sustainability and Environmental Professionals (ISEP), representing sustainability and environmental professionals globally – across government, business and society.
